Filming Commences for Donald Trump Biopic, ‘The Apprentice’, Examining the Former President’s Ascension to Power
Production has kicked off for ‘The Apprentice,’ a biographical film delving into the early years of former US President Donald Trump’s life and his journey to prominence. The star-studded cast is set to explore Trump’s role as a New York real estate magnate and his association with Roy Cohn, the notorious lawyer who served as his mentor and was later disbarred for unethical conduct.
Directed by Ali Abbasi, the Iranian filmmaker acclaimed for his 2022 thriller ‘Holy Spider,’ the film is anticipated to provide a compelling narrative on Trump’s formative years. Abbasi’s previous work includes directing the final two episodes of the popular video game adaptation ‘The Last of Us.’ The screenplay is crafted by Gabriel Sherman, the journalist and author renowned for ‘The Loudest Voice in the Room,’ a biography of Fox News founder Roger Ailes adapted into a 2019 miniseries starring Russell Crowe.
Described as a “mentor-protege story that charts the origins of an American dynasty,” the film aims to unveil the moral and human consequences of a culture defined by winners and losers.
Sebastian Stan, recognized for his role as Captain America’s ally and lead in ‘Pam & Tommy,’ takes on the role of a young Donald Trump. Jeremy Strong, Emmy-winning star of ‘Succession,’ portrays Roy Cohn, while Maria Bakalova, Oscar-nominated for her performance as Borat’s daughter, embodies Ivana Trump, the former president’s first wife.
Set against the backdrop of the 1970s and 80s, the film explores how Trump acquired the skills of deal-making and manipulation under the guidance of Cohn, a prominent figure during the McCarthy era and AIDS crisis. Cohn, also Trump’s lawyer in various legal battles, played a pivotal role in shaping the former president’s political ambitions.
As Trump remains a polarizing figure, facing legal challenges and potential political aspirations, ‘The Apprentice’ aims to shed light on the origins of his controversial personality and legacy. The film is expected to provide insights into Trump’s early experiences and the influential figures who shaped his trajectory.
Despite facing two impeachments and confronting 91 felony charges in multiple criminal cases, current polls suggest Trump is considering a presidential run in 2024. Additionally, he is embroiled in a high-profile fraud trial in Manhattan, making the biopic a timely exploration of the roots of his complex and enduring legacy.
