Emily Blunt Takes a Walk Through Her Filmography, Reflects on Memorable Lines
In a nostalgic journey through her illustrious career, Emily Blunt participated in the Variety Know Their Lines event presented by Lifetime, where she was challenged to recall iconic lines from her diverse filmography.
The first line presented to Blunt was a quote from her character in “The Devil Wears Prada”: “You went upstairs? You went upstairs. Oh my God. Why didn’t you just crawl into bed with her and ask for a bedtime story?” Blunt quickly recognized it, reflecting on her role as Emily and the transformative experience the film provided. “I think I’d just been dressing like a teenage boy until that happened, and I learned a lot,” she remarked.
Moving on, Blunt identified the line “You don’t get to commit the sin and then ask us all to feel sorry for you when there are consequences” from “Oppenheimer.” She delved into her preparation for the role, mentioning reading “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” to understand the character of Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer.
Blunt smoothly recalled lines from “Mary Poppins,” “Five-Year Engagement,” and “Jungle Cruise,” sharing anecdotes from her time on each set. Whispering the poignant line “Who are we if we can’t protect them? We have to protect them” from “A Quiet Place,” Blunt highlighted the film’s ability to convey emotion with limited dialogue.
However, she found herself stumped by the line “All this power, wasted on parties, when there are far greater uses” from “My Little Pony: The Movie.” Reflecting on her mistake, she humorously questioned, “How did I not pull that out?” An incorrect guess followed for the line “Anything is possible because I am not the girl I used to be,” which Blunt attributed to “Young Victorian” instead of “The Girl on the Train.” This led her to reflect on the challenge of playing the lead role and creating her version of the character.
Blunt continued the journey, recalling the line “Come find me when you wake up” from “Edge of Tomorrow,” expressing admiration for co-star Tom Cruise’s enthusiasm and generosity during the filming process. The event concluded with Blunt identifying the line “When we catch him, I want you to set me on fire” from her first TV project, “Boudica.”
Summing up her journey, Blunt expressed gratitude for her evolution in the industry. “In the beginning, I don’t remember having sort of outlandish ambitions for myself. I remember being thrilled at whatever gig I got. I still maybe disassociate a bit, like where I am now compared to where I started out. But I’m grateful for the journey,” she reflected.
